A dream of ours has always been to connect Lake Superior to James Bay and walk it by snowshoe. Just look at a map of Ontario and you can help but think it is an appealing adventure!
This is the first leg of that ambitious journey! Starting at the Lake Superior coast, we will travel along the Michipicoten waterway to reach the headwaters area of the historic and mighty Missinaibi River.
This is a long and likely challenging journey. It takes place near the end of winter when the snow depth is likely reaching it’s peak and is in one of the snowiest parts of the province in the snow shadow of the incredible Lake Superior. (Nearby Sault Ste. Marie receives an average of 120.4″ of snowfall a year, over 10 feet!).
The Michipicoten River has been altered by dams, and is no longer a reliable winter travel route, so route finding will require flexibility, potentially unorthodox travel plans, teamwork and perseverance.
This is our first time traveling this route, so it will be an journey of adventure and surprises. This route-finding mission will also help set the stage for a successful start to our complete crossing of Ontario that we’ll be undertaking in 2022!
